HIKE IN THORSMORK NATURE RESERVE
Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Nature Reserve is one of Iceland’s most beautiful areas, known for its sweeping mountain and glacier views, hidden waterfalls, dramatic canyons, and birch forests. For us locals, it’s a place close to our hearts—a spot to hike, connect with nature, and experience the land’s energy cradled between three glaciers.
This tour is for those who want to experience an off-the-beaten-path hike with a local. At Midgard, we embrace slow travel and believe the best adventures are personal. The guide will take you to their favorite spots, share sagas and stories, and explain why Þórsmörk is so special to Icelanders.
Each hike is tailored to the day’s conditions, making every tour unique. The routes range from 6 to 12 km with 3 to 4 hours of hiking. Elevation gain varies between 350 and 800 meters.
The following are examples of our hikes:
- Tindfjallahringur hike in Þórsmörk is an 8-12 km loop through wilderness terrain. The trail passes through lush valleys, birch forests, and ridgelines with views of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. The hike takes you through the diverse, peaceful and dramatic landscapes of Þórsmörk, offering an authentic Icelandic nature experience.
- Hvannárgil hike is a 6-8 km loop through a narrow canyon. The trail winds along the riverbeds and climbs ridges for sweeping views of Þórsmörk’s valleys, glaciers, and birch forests. It’s an ideal hike for adventurers seeking to explore the raw beauty and tranquility of Þórsmörk’s less-traveled paths.
- Hestagötur hike is a 9 km trail through birch forests, ridges, and rocky paths, offering close views of valleys and glaciers like Mýrdalsjökull. It follows old sheep paths, perfect for exploring Þórsmörk’s scenic and quiet spots.
